history
MSC was founded in 1970 as a private company, Buffon Aponte bought his first ship "Patricia", followed by "Rafaela", Aponte started between the Mediterranean Sea and Somalia Operating a shipping shipping business. MSC subsequently expanded by purchasing second-hand cargo ships. By 1977, the company was operating services to Northern Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean. Expansion continued in the 1980s; by the end of the last century, MSC's shipping lines served North America and Australia.
In 1989, MSC purchased cruise operator Lauro Lines, which in 1995 was renamed Mediterranean Shipping Lines (MSC Cruises) and subsequently added to the cruise line.
In 1994, MSC planned its first newly built vessel, which was delivered in early 1996 under the name "MSC Alexa", built by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri.
As of October 2014, Diego Aponte (son of MSC founder Buffon Aponte) was appointed President and CEO of MSC, succeeding his father as Group Executive Chairman. Buffon Aponte will continue to be responsible for all related activities of the group, as well as supporting Diego in shaping the future of MSC.
